Device Toolbar
From Audacity Development Manual
Device Toolbar provides an easy way to select the combination of interface host and sound device to be used for playback and recording, without having to open the Devices Preferences.
Devices Toolbar is not enabled by default. To enable it, click .
Playback Device
Gale: wouldn't a single image with both playback and recording menus open, an arrow indicating which is which, be more sensible?
- Peter 18Nov09 - why do the images have text in a different typeface (looks like Times New Roman to me)
- Bill 18Nov09 - here for your consideration is a photoshopped device toolbar with the menus dropped down. Does it look real (aside from the fact that you can't drop down both menus at once)? Yes, I realize I've cut off a pixel or two at the bottoms of the menus - if people like this I will go back and fix it.

Choose the hardware device in or attached to your computer that you want to use for playback.
Recording Device

Choose the hardware device in or attached to your computer that you want to use for recording.
Audacity must use the same interface host (for example, MME or DirectSound on Windows) to communicate with both the playback device and the recording device. Therefore if you change the host in either the playback or recording menu so that it differs from the host in the other menu, the host in that other menu will change to respect that.
