Come registrare in stereo?

Audacity di default dovrebbe già essere predisposto per registrare in stereo. Se così non è, usa la Barra Dispositivi per selezionare le interfacce di ingresso ed uscita, e nella casella "Canali ingresso" seleziona "2 (stereo) Canali di ingresso".

In alternativa, puoi aprire le Preferenze di Audacity, scegli a sinistra la sezione “Dispositivi”, quindi nel pannello "Registrazione" cambia il numero di canali in registrazione ("Canali:") a "2 (Stereo)", e clicca "OK".

Windows Vista e 7: Diverse interfacce di registrazione USB, anche se stereo, sono viste come "microfono" e quindi registrate in mono; se Audacity per contro è settato in stereo, registrerà due canali identici. Per impostare Windows perche' registri in stereo da quell'interfaccia:

  1. Accanto all'orologio di sistema, clicca col destro sulla icona dell'altoparlante > Dispositivi di registrazione quindi seleziona la porta che vuoi usare della tua interfaccia USB (oppure "USB Audio Codec"); clicca ora su "Proprietà" e, nella tab "Avanzate", controlla che il Formato predefinito sia "2 canali, 16 bit, 44100 Hz".

Qual'è il livello ottimale di registrazione?

Cerca di ottenere un picco massimo attorno a -6 dB sulla Barra Monitor (o 0.5 se l'indice è impostato su una scala lineare). Ciò dovrebbe mettere ai ripari dal "clipping". Sulla forma d'onda di default della registrazione si dovrebbe vedere un picco massimo attorno a solo 0.5 ma, dato il modo in cui risponde l'orecchio, tale picco è avvertito in realtà molto più forte di un apparente "mezzo volume".

Se necessario, puoi alzare il livello dopo la registrazione ed eventuali modifiche usando Effetti > Amplifica... o Effetti > Normalizza....

Come faccio a registrare da dischi in vinile, cassette o MiniDisc?

  1. Imposta Audacity per registrare in stereo.
  2. Inserisci lo spinotto di un cavo stereo nel connettore "Line out" o "Cuffia" del lettore di cassette, MiniDisc o sistema stereo. Connetti l'altra estremità del cavo alla porta "Line In" (ingresso a livello linea) del computer. Se non hai il cavo adatto, lo puoi trovare in un negozio di elettronica.
  3. Scegli "Line In" nella Barra Dispositivi o nelle Preferenze di Audacity (Windows Vista/7) o nello "Audio-MIDI Setup" se Apple.
  4. Premi il bottone rosso Registra. Mentre Audacity sta registrando, fai partire il nastro o il giradischi. Quando hai finito di registrare premi il bottone giallo Stop. Puoi anche premere il tasto blu Pausa per sospendere la registrazione e premerlo di nuovo per riprenderla.

I dischi in vinile o shellac possono anche essere registrati in Audacity con un particolare tipo di giradischi che si connette direttamente ad una porta USB del computer. Con questo tipo di giradischi le impostazioni sono diverse rispetto ad un stereo tradizionale. Per indicazioni su come predisporre l'ambiente di registrazione, vedi Registrare con giradischi USB quindi Operazioni di base per registrare, modificare ed esportare nel "tutorial" principale.

Note sulla connessione:

  • Non connettere un giradischi tradizionale direttamente al computer. Il segnale proveniente dal giradischi deve passare attraverso un pre-amplificatore fono o comunque un ricevitore con ingresso fono che fornisca il primo livello di amplificazione. Diversamente, il livello sarà troppo basso ed il suono "sottile" a causa della non corretta equalizzazione.
  • Non connettere l'uscita dello stereo (o equivalente) all'ingresso "Microfono" del computer. Normalmente quell'ingresso è progettato per segnali monofonici a basso livello: produrrà distorsione se ci immetti un segnale amplificato. Se c'è, usa invece la porta "line in" (su certi laptop a altri portatili la porta "mic" può essere impostata per accettare segnali a livello linea. Vedi ulteriore aiuto in merito.

Posso ascoltare una traccia mentre ne sto registrando un'altra?

E' un tipo di registrazione detta overdub (sovraregistrazione) e serve per creare registrazioni multi-trccia; con essa è possibile creare armonie da soli, o aggiungere nuovi strumenti o parti vocali a registrazioni esistenti. Per farlo con Audacity, segui queste istruzioni:

  1. Nella sezione "Dispositivo di ingresso" della Barra Dispositivi seleziona la porta di ingresso a cui sei collegato (probabilmente l'ingresso microfono o il line-in) .
    • Se non vedi l'input che ti occorre, abilitalo e rendilo il "predefinito" nel mixer del sistema operativo, quindi in Audacity scegli Attività > Ripeti ricerca per dispositivi audio.
  2. Importa o registra la prima traccia.
  3. Scegli Attività > Sovraregistra (Attivo/Non attivo).
  4. Premi il bottone Registra il bottone Registra .
Se stai registrando da microfono, per ascoltare usa le cuffie, in modo che il microfono "senta" solo ciò che vuoi registrare. Istruzioni dettagliate ed illustrate su come fare sovraincisioni sono nel tutorial Registrare sovraincisioni multitraccia.

Con Audacity si può registrare YouTube, la radio internet o altri audio "streaming"?

  • Con molte interfacce audio su Windows e Linux, è possibile registrare qualsiasi suono il computer stia emettendo, incluso quanto tramesso dalle radio internet.
  • Gli utenti Mac OS X possono catturare audio "streaming" (mentre sta "fluendo" dal computer) con un programma come Soundflower (gratuito e a sorgenti accessibili) o Audio Hijack.

How long can I record for?

Audacity does not restrict recording length or how many times you can record, beyond some specific technical and practical limitations. Recording takes space on your drive so you can only record while the drive still has space available. When you start to record, Audacity shows a "Disk space remains for recording" message in the Status Bar at bottom left of the window giving the current recording time available.

To get more recording time:

  • Delete your old files and folders (especially your old Audacity Project files and _data folders when you have finished with them)
  • Select an alternative disk that has more space in the Directories Preferences
  • Record in mono instead of stereo (settable at "Input Channels" in Device Toolbar or in Devices Preferences)
  • Set the "Default Sample Format" in Quality Preferences to 16-bit instead of 32-bit (this is a good choice for a "quick recording" which you export at once without editing).
Alert Very long recordings (over 13.5 hours at 44100 Hz Project Rate and shorter for higher rates) cannot be saved as a single Audacity Project. Before quitting Audacity, the recording can be split to multiple projects or exported as one or more audio files (subject to any file size limitations for the format). Can I set Audacity to record at a certain time?

Yes! See Timer Record in the Transport menu.

You can also make Audacity stop recording after a certain time limit without using the Timer Record feature, by following these steps:

  1. Turn on “Overdub: Play other tracks while recording a new one” in the “Recording” section of the preferences.
  2. Choose “Add new > Audio Track” from the Tracks menu.
  3. Zoom out if necessary, then click and drag to select the amount of time you want to record.
  4. Start recording. Audacity will stop recording automatically when it reaches the end of the selected area.

Can I record from a multi-channel device (more than stereo)?

Yes, but this is not simple; typically this does not work "out of the box" on Windows consumer systems, and always requires use of appropriate hardware and device drivers. There are some known Audacity limitations in channel selection and channel-to-track allocation. It is essential that sample rates are matched in all places (Audacity, the operating system and the device). See this Wiki article for more details.

Can I record from two microphones (or even two sound cards) at the same time?

Audacity can only record from one sound device at a time, but here are some solutions.

  • If your sound device has separate left and right mic inputs, connect the separate microphones to those inputs.
  • Connect the separate microphones to a mixer and record from the mixer.
  • If these are dynamic microphones that don't need extra power, buy an adaptor that has two inputs for the microphones with a single 1/8 inch TRS connector for the computer microphone port (this will usually only give you a combined mono input).
  • Record each track to different computers.
  • If you have two USB microphones or any other separate sound devices you can aggregate them as a single device.
Separate audio devices such as two USB microphones or devices on different computers will have separate clock speeds (in the absence of a master clock to synchronize to). Therefore the two inputs may drift apart over time.
