ToDo - page created by Bill Nov 1 2009. Needs checking for accuracy and completeness.
The Metadata Editor window is used to enter metadata ("data about data") that will be embedded in exported audio files. This is useful mostly for MP3 files where this information is stored in the ID3 tags, which can then be read and interpreted by media players such as iTunes to display this information about the files.

Tag and Value list

  • Tag: The first seven Tags are fixed and cannot be changed. You can add more tags using the "Add" button (see below).
  • Value: Type in the value you want for each Tag. You don't have to fill in all the values. Clicking once on a value field will select that field - typing will highlight the field and replace the contents. Clicking again on a selected field without typing first will highlight the text in the field and allow you to edit the contents of the field rather than simply replacing it with what you type. Once a value field has been highlighted you need to press the RETURN key, or click in another value field, to finish editing the field and move to another field.
Note that the Genre field has a popup menu where you can select from a list of genres. If the genre you want is not in the menu you can type anything you want into this field.
  • Add: Click this button to add a new Tag to the list. Note that the first time you open the Metadata Editor there is already one empty Tag field at the bottom of the list. Simply click in the Tag field and type a name for the Tag.
  • Remove: Removes the currently selected Tag-Value pair from the list. Note that you cannot remove any of the first seven pairs in the list.
  • Clear: Clears all the Values in the list.

Genres

  • Edit: Edit the genre list displayed when you click in the Value field for the Genre tag.
  • Reset: Reset the genre list to the default.

Template

  • Load: Load a previously save list of Tag-Value pairs into the Metadata Editor window.
  • Save: Save the current list of Tag-Value pairs into a file on your hard disk.
  • Set Default: Make the current list of Tag-Value pairs the default when the Metadata Window opens.
If you have checked "Show Metadata Editor before export step" in Import/Export Preferences then the Metadata Editor will pop up before the File Save dialog does. You need to click the "OK" button in the Metadata Editor window to continue with the Export operation. Clicking the "Save..." button in the Metadata Editor does not save your exported file - it saves the template of Tag-Value pairs as noted above.
