The Toolbars provide quick access to many functions in Audacity. In some cases the functions provided by a toolbar are available only through that toolbar.
Gale: Are we going for below idea with Transcription and Tools side-by-side at the bottom; or all images in their own row, only longer images have text under, otherwise floated to right? If the former, we need the Transcription image to have space at the bottom (or a spacer image) so that the height matches with Tools.

Bill: Expanded transcription toolbar image added. Ed now had a windows image of the mixer toolbar with the input selector enabled - do we now want to get rid of the Mac image?
I'm fine with this page as it is now. - Nov 21/09
-- Ed 29 November 2009 I still have a major problem with the side-by-side at the bottom -- it's especially bad now with the big white rectangle between the image of the Transcription Toolbar and its text description; this makes it look like something is missing. If we are going to keep both the Mac and the Windows image of the mixer toolbar we need to label them as such -- since there is now little difference I would get rid of the Mac version.
Bill 29Nov09: Mac mixer toolbar now gone.
How does this look? It's not a "prettytable" like the other overview pages. Is that an issue? The borderless table gets rid of the "whitespace" issue, IMO.
"Arranging Toolbars" section copied from "Toolbars" page and tweaked.

Bill 06Mar11:

  • Toolbars should be reordered alphabetically to reflect their order in the View menu.
    • Done 31Mar11
  • Mixer toolbar needs a new image without the input combobox
    • Done 02Apr11
  • Device toolbar should have "generic" choices displayed - something that someone with a "stock" PC is likely to see.

Bill 31Mar11:

Arranging Toolbars

Toolbars can be moved to any new positions on the window background by dragging on their serrated left edge. When moving a toolbar into the top and bottom of the Audacity screen which will normally be occupied by other toolbars, a blue triangle will appear indicating an available docking position. All position changes are remembered in the next Audacity session. The default toolbar positions can be restored at any time by clicking View > Toolbars > Reset Toolbars

The blue triangle indicates an available docking position for Tools Toolbar alongside Control Toolbar   The blue triangle indicates an available docking position for Tools Toolbar alongside Control Toolbar
