Default layout of Control Toolbar buttons
The Control Toolbar has buttons for controlling playback and recording. All these buttons can also be controlled with keyboard shortcuts.
Does this layout work any better? What about the idea of having the button in the header as in "record"? Looks perfect to me, but what screen readers make of it I don't know. Basically, having "new text" above headered "old text" does not work well here because the "old text" can't usefully be any longer than the "new text", hence the whole looks like two duplicated sections. This current idea looks better still if we disable the contents table with __NOTOC__ - Gale

Play

Play.png If an area of track is selected, only that selection will be played. Otherwise, playback begins wherever the selection cursor is. To start playback from the beginning, choose Skip to Start.

Loop

File:Loop.png Hold down Shift while pressing Play to loop the current selection or the whole track, playing it over and over again until you press Stop.

Record Record.png

Recording begins at either the current cursor location or at the beginning of the current selection. Pressing Record always creates a new track, but holding down Shift while pressing Record starts the recording at the end of the currently selected track(s).

Stop

Stop.png Stops playing or recording immediately.

Pause

Pause.png Temporarily pauses playing or recording without losing your place. Press Pause a second time to resume.

Rewind.png Move the cursor to the beginning of the audio. This is useful if you want to play everything, or record a new track starting from the beginning.

FFwd.png Move the cursor to the end of the audio.

///Old Version of This Text

Rewind File:Transport rewind.png Cursor to Start Places the cursor at the start of the project. SHIFT + click creates a selection area from the cursor to the start, or from the right edge of a selection area to the start.

Play

File:Transport play.png Play Button

Press the play button to listen to the audio in your project. You can also hit the spacebar to start or stop playback. Playback begins at the current cursor position. If a region of audio is selected, only the selected region will play. To quickly play the entire project, execute Select All before playing. If there are multiple tracks going to the same channel in your project, they will be mixed automatically for playback.

Record

Press the record button to record a new track from your computer's sound input device. Use the Preferences to configure the recording options. In particular, there is an option to record stereo or mono, and there is an option to play the other tracks while recording.

Recording always happens at the project's sample rate.

Pause

File:Transport pause.png Pause Button

Will pause during playback, or during recording. Press again to unpause.

Stop

File:Transport stop.png Stop Button

Press the stop button or hit the spacebar to stop playback immediately.

Fast Forward File:Transport ff.png Cursor to End Places the cursor at the end of the project. SHIFT + click creates a selection area from the cursor to the end, or from the left edge of a selection area to the end.
